Redwood Coast
The Ricochet Ridge Ranch offers an ideal vacation for people who know and love horses and already ride well -- the opportunity to ride athletic endurance horses through redwood forests, along Pacific Coast beaches and across hilly coastal rangelands with spectacular views. Less-experienced riders will feel right at home, too, because the horses are well-trained and carefully matched to riders' abilities. Unusual in the U.S., you can choose English or Western tack, and even bring your own saddle. All meals and comfortable lodging at Hill House Inn or area bed and breakfasts are included. Rates in 2010 for weeklong trips were about $2,300 per person double occupancy, with custom guided trips also available. Summer is the main season, but come in May for wildflower rides or in September and early October for the balmy fog-free days of Indian summer. Ricochet Ridge Ranch hosts its annual Equine, Wine and Song Week ($2,800 per person double occupancy, as of 2010) in late July, which includes riding, a tour of fine area wineries and the annual Mendocino Music Festival.
